FAQs
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is highly focused attention on a beneficial idea.
We hypnotize ourselves all the time. We are constantly shifting in and out of powerful states of hypnosis, some of the common ones that you might be able to relate to are:
The hypnosis of habituated fear
The hypnosis of worry
The hypnosis of repetitive thoughts.
The process of hypnosis is a guided journey through your own imagination and wisdom, practicing ‘As If’ scenario’s. When practicing ‘As if’ the body, and therefore, the nervous system do not know the difference between rehearsal and actual events. This imaginal protocol counteracts the self hypnosis of negative thinking that humans engage in all day long.
Will I be able to remember?
Yes, you are fully in control of the experience of hypnosis. You are in a highly focused state of attention, and the experiences of the guided journey will result in a hyper sense of the now. You will be able to remember, and recall the experience completely.
Am I in Control?
Yes, you are fully in control of the experience of hypnosis at all times.
The unfortunate rise in the popularity of stage hypnosis, has created some unfortunate misconceptions about hypnosis. One of the outcomes of stage hypnosis is that people are shown demonstrations of people not being in control of their bodies, and memory. These shows are for entertainment, and the participants are chosen for specific reasons, most notably exhibitionism and extroversion. I don’t enjoy watching the process of people being asked to do outlandish things, and humiliated. What I do know about hypnosis is that the participants are willingly acting in these shows.
What is an induction, and what does it feel like?
A hypnotic induction is a process that prepares the mind to enter a state of deep relaxation, and focus. I use several different techniques to assist a client to get to this focused state, the one that I commonly use is an eye induction, where I ask the client to focus on a blue dot on the ceiling, using the power of the muscles of the eyes to access the brain stem for deep relaxation. After some practice clients are able to access this state very quickly with or without a formal induction process.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. A certain portion of the population are highly sensitive to hypnosis, and for them it is a more intense experience. However, in multiple studies the results remain the same for someone who is able to go into a deep state of hypnosis, as to a person who reports that they drift in and out of attention, the results are found to be the same.
The most common experience of hypnosis is time blindness, where a hypnosis session might last for 45 minutes but to the client it feels more like 10 minutes. This is due to a hyper focused flow state of attention.
Most people feel different levels of deep relaxation, where their muscles are completely relaxed. Some people feel a sense of anaesthesia across their entire body. This is something that I experience in hypnosis, a numbing of my entire body.
Dr. Huberman, a neuroscientist at Stanford University School of Medicine, is calling this state, Non-Sleep Deep Relaxation, which is shown to result in improved restorative sleep, reduced physical impacts of chronic stress, and improves memory, cognition and immune function.
Most people report that their body is able to relax very deeply, and that their mind is able to stay intensely focused on the beneficial suggestions and imagery.
I don’t have a good imagination, will this still work for me?
Yes! Everyone has different levels of imagination access. Some people can be given a suggestion of a room that they will then complete with detailed decoration, and then there are some folks who will just get a sense of being in a room. The important aspect here is the sense of the experience that you are sending to your body, nervous system, and unconscious mind.
What is imagery, and how is it used?
Images are the language of the body. In the context of hypnosis, imagery refers to the mental process of creating vivid, sensory-rich experiences in one's mind. It involves using imagination to generate detailed mental pictures, sounds, sensations, and even emotions associated with a particular scenario or suggestion.
Does it work, and will it for me?
I only practice evidence based hypnosis, with studies to back up good results.
I have found that those folks who come to hypnosis eager to do the work, expecting positive results, and willing to invest meaningful time to the process experience the most dramatic results.
Can hypnosis help with exam anxiety?
Yes, hypnosis can be a powerful tool to manage and reduce exam anxiety. By using targeted imagery and calming techniques, hypnosis helps retrain the mind's response to stress, making it easier to stay focused, calm, and confident during exams.
Will hypnosis help me remember more during a test?
Hypnosis can't make you remember things you haven't studied, but it can dramatically improve your ability to access the information you've learned. By calming the nervous system and sharpening focus, hypnosis helps create an optimal state for memory retrieval and clear thinking during exams.
Do I have to believe in hypnosis for it to work for exam stress?
No! You don't need to "believe" in hypnosis for it to be effective. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention that anyone can experience. All that's needed is a willingness to participate and follow the simple guidance provided.
How many sessions will I need to feel a difference before an exam?
Many clients report feeling noticeable improvements after just one to three sessions. However, the number of sessions can vary depending on the individual and their level of exam anxiety. We'll work together to find the right approach for you.
Can hypnosis help me focus better while studying?
Absolutely. Hypnosis is not just for exam day, it can also be used to create deeper focus and concentration during study sessions. Many clients find that they are able to study longer, retain more information, and feel less overwhelmed after using my hypnosis techniques.
